A Splendid Holiday Indeed

December 15, 2010

Last night was the perfect treat at the end of another mundane day. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, my fave, hosted “A Splendid Holiday” event in support of Local Matters at The North Market. For $20 I enjoyed a smorgasbord of local sweets, pizza, drinks and tunes. It was a sold out event and I counted myself as one of the lucky few that snagged a ticket.

Just a sampling

Even though I felt like I needed to be taken home on a gurney at the end of the evening, I would not go back and forgo one tasty morsel. Each of these delectable treats were provided by local bakeries and included: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, 3 Babes and a Baker, Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties, Pistacia Vera, Pattycake Bakery, Sassafras Bakery, Mozart’s Bakery, and Expressly Market Bakery and Bistro. My absolute favorite bite of the night was a mini coconut cream pie from 3 Babes and a Baker that smelled like vacation and tasted even sweeter. All of the bakeries had scrumptious goodies though. I partook in bites of everything from elderberry turnovers to dark chocolate orange brownies to vegan sugar cookies to petit fours. I didn’t want to pass up any opportunities to taste something new and amazing. Not to mention, watching the Baked Alaska Pies being constructed by the people at Jeni’s was a unique opportunity that I wish I had learned more from and could recreate …

Mmm Mmm Good

If I hadn’t arrived early, I would have missed out on the uniquely delicious slices of fresh, cornmeal-crusted pizza from Clever Crow Pizza. The toppings were to die for and the roasted garlic was perfection. It’s located in the Short North, so make the journey and taste a slice; you won’t be disappointed.

Now, you are probably wondering what local drinks were provided, as was I. I tried a little of everything, of course: Middle West Spirits, Rockmill Brewery, Brothers Drake Meadery, Barley’s Brewing Company, and The Barrel and The Bottle. Although I recommend them all, I thoroughly enjoyed the Saison from Rockmill, which is a Belgian-style organic beer with a spicy and fruity flavor. Hands down favorite of the night though was the taste of the latest vodka from Middle West Spirits; this OYO Vanilla Honey Vodka was ridiculously good and has become my new favorite vodka. There is very little of it being made and distributed right now (about 12 cases), so if you are fortunate enough to see it, do not let the opportunity pass you by: grab it up! OYO is also featured in an article this season in edible Columbus Magazine explaining the owners’ business strategy and their partnership/mentor relationship with Jeni Britton Bauer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

Who knew supporting Local Matters could be so fun? I certainly hope more events like this one come about, although I do need to time recover form this one. So much food over such a short period of time … now it’s time for Commit to be Fit.
